The Selfless Act of Pursuing Your Passions

When I sat down to write this blog, so many things flashed through my mind as things that are looked at either internally (we’re our own worst critic, most of the time) or externally. Que, MOM GUILT! How often to we as moms (or parents) take time for ourselves and then feel guilty that we did? It could be as simple as locking the bathroom door and taking an extra long bath or shower ALONE with no interruptions -or if you’re at the point in your life, taking a much needed vacation. Let’s not feel guilty for doing things we love, things we need and things that make us a better, fill in the blank….parent, partner, friend, etc.!

In a world where selflessness is often revered, pursuing one's passions is sometimes deemed selfish. However, this notion couldn't be further from the truth. Engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment isn't an act of selfishness but rather a crucial component of leading a balanced and purposeful life. Let's debunk the myth that doing what you love is selfish and explore why it's not only beneficial for you but also for those around you.

Embracing Authenticity

Authenticity is a cornerstone of personal fulfillment. When you follow your passions, you're being true to yourself and honoring your unique talents and interests. Suppressing your passions in favor of societal expectations or obligations can lead to feelings of resentment, frustration, and even burnout. Embracing what you love isn't selfish; it's an act of self-care and self-respect.

Inspiring Others

Your pursuit of passion can inspire those around you to do the same. When others witness your enthusiasm and dedication, it can ignite a spark within them to explore their own interests and pursue their dreams. By leading by example, you contribute positively to the collective pursuit of fulfillment and happiness.

Fostering Creativity and Innovation

Passion is a driving force behind creativity and innovation. When you engage in activities you love, you're more likely to think outside the box, explore new ideas, and push boundaries. Whether you're an artist, entrepreneur, or scientist, your passion fuels your creativity and drives progress in your respective field. Ultimately, this benefits not only yourself but also society as a whole.

Cultivating Well-being

Engaging in activities that bring you joy has numerous benefits for your mental and emotional well-being. Studies have shown that pursuing hobbies and interests can reduce stress, boost mood, and improve overall quality of life. When you prioritize your well-being, you're better equipped to show up fully for others and contribute positively to your relationships and community.

Finding Purpose

This may be the biggest area for me that brings me joy. I can remember searching for things that brought me purpose and made me feel alive, and after 40 years on the planet, I found it. Rather, I accepted what was knocking at my door for years. I’ll share with you all, or y’all if you’re from the south (I’m always channeling my southern roots) I digress. However, finding and accepting my purpose has been one of the most rewarding things in my life! One of my purposes is to serve. Serve my loved ones, serve humanity and serve the planet. In doing so, it makes me feel like I belong anywhere I go and that I am making a difference - all which bring me JOY and PURPOSE!

Discovering and pursuing your passions can give your life a sense of purpose and meaning. Whether it's through art, music, sports, or any other endeavor, immersing yourself in what you love allows you to connect with something greater than yourself. This sense of purpose not only enriches your own life but also enables you to make a meaningful impact on the world around you.

In conclusion, doing what you love is far from selfish; it's an essential aspect of leading a fulfilling and purposeful life. By embracing your passions, you honor your authenticity, inspire others, foster creativity and innovation, cultivate well-being, and find a sense of purpose. So, the next time you're hesitant to pursue your dreams for fear of being labeled selfish, remember that your pursuit of passion is not only valid but also inherently selfless. By prioritizing your own happiness and fulfillment, you contribute positively to the well-being of yourself and those around you. So go ahead, follow your heart, and let your passions lead the way.
